Fear is a central feeling worked on in breathing therapy to make it possible to endure and handle it. We work back and forth on the safety—fear axis, alternately reinforcing the feeling of safety and working through fears. Breathing plays a central role in such regulation. Calm breathing and the words “Don’t worry, everything is fine” speak to our early experiences of fear. This work recreates the ability to calm down and improves the ability to apply safe images in anxiety-provoking or stressful situations.
